For Millicent, after her husband died, she was faced with another tough decision: stay with her two children in Kenya, or leave them with family in hopes of creating a better life in Canada and be reunited later.
After making that gut-wrenching decision, she arrived in Burlington and enrolled in school. Upon graduation, Millicent found a job and saved enough money to fly her 13 year old son Austin and her 11 year old daughter Donna to Canada to be reunited as a happy family once again.
Despite Austin and Donna being excited to see and experience their first winter with snow, they did not bargain for ice on the inside of the apartment windows. The family is currently living in a two-bedroom apartment where mother and daughter share a room.
Throughout the application process, it was Austin who proved to be a rock-solid supporter and cheerleader. He constantly told his mother to remain positive and be confident that their prayers for a home would be answered.
His, and the family’s prayers, were certainly answered and they could not be happier. In May the family will participate in the ground breaking ceremony and will be hard at work building their dreams with the help of dozens of other volunteers and corporate sponsors. With a lot of love, hard work, and helping hands, Austin and Donna will get to experience another great Canadian winter, but this time from the warmth and safety of their new home.
